Key trends highlighted in the market as of Q4 2024
Premium Increases:
Premiums across all account sizes rose by an average of 5.4% in Q4 2024, slightly up from 5.1% in Q3. Medium-sized accounts experienced the largest average increase at 6.4%, closely followed by large-sized accounts at 6.3%.

Line-Specific Trends:
While most lines of business saw premium changes comparable to or lower than those in Q3 2024, certain lines like workers compensation, directors and officers (D&O), and cyber insurance continued to see decreases. Notably, employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) experienced a modest average decrease of 0.2%.

Cyber Insurance:
Cyber premiums fell by an average of 1.8% in Q4 2024, marking a record low for this line. This decline in premiums was driven by increased underwriting capacity, heightened competition among carriers for U.S. cyber business, and improved cyber resiliency among insureds.

Commercial Auto and Umbrella Insurance:
These lines experienced the highest average premium increases, at 8.9% and 8.7% respectively. Amongst the reasons for such elevated premium increases are:
Challenges such as driver shortages, rising repair costs, and supply chain issues increasing the frequency and severity of commercial auto claims.
The average loss per commercial liability claim has doubled since 2014.
The trend toward fleet electrification contributes to higher premiums due to the unique risk profiles of electric vehicles.
Looking ahead to 2025, several trends are expected to influence the commercial property and casualty insurance landscape:

Market Stabilization:
After significant premium hikes in previous years, the commercial property insurance market is showing signs of stabilization. Premium increases are predicted to range from flat to 15% in 2025, depending on factors such as risk exposure and loss history.
Cyber Insurance Dynamics:
Continuing the trend discussed above through Q4 2024, the cyber insurance market is anticipated to maintain relative stability into 2025. Rate changes are expected to fall within -5% to +5% in the first half of the year. This stability continues to be attributed to improved underwriting practices and increased capacity, and improved cyber resilience of clients. However, emerging threats, particularly those related to artificial intelligence (AI) and supply chain vulnerabilities, could influence future premium rates.

Impact of Social Inflation:
The industry continues to grapple with social inflation, characterized by rising insurance claim costs due to increased litigation, higher jury awards, and broader definitions of liability. This trend is expected to continue to lead to higher premiums and affect the availability of coverage in certain sectors.
Technological Advancements and AI:
The integration of AI and data analytics is transforming underwriting and risk assessment processes, enabling insurers to offer more tailored coverage options. However, the adoption of AI also introduces new risks, as discussed in the Cyber Insurance Dynamics above, such as AI-powered cyberattacks and deepfake scams. These trends require continuous updates to risk management strategies and policy terms.

Climate Change and Environmental Risks:
The increasing frequency and severity of natural catastrophes, including hurricanes, wildfires, and convective storms underscore the need for insurers to develop solutions addressing environmental risks. This focus is prompting the industry to enhance risk modeling and adjust underwriting guidelines in response.
